fashion-festival-AND-ART-IN-FUSION-1It’s that time of the year again and it just keeps getting bigger and better. The Cannes Film Festival is as much about celebrating films as it is about the red carpet looks when designers send out their finest and fanciest couture down the red carpet. So drum rolls and here goes the list (in no particular order):

1. Lupita Nyong’o in Gucci:

What is it one wouldn’t love about this look? Like this entire look has Diva written all over it. To start with she’s wearing a dramatic Gucci gown, and more importantly it is green in color. Since her debut at the red carpets in 2014 she’s clearly been at the top of her game (Remember the dramatic red cape gown at the Golden Globes last year?) in the fashion front and this time was no different. I love it when she does color because she pulls it off so well. I personally think colors in general look really good on women. And I really love it when celebrities do a pretty color on the red carpet, other than the classic nude. The glossy orchid lips are a stunner. But what’s more interesting is the oh-so-fabulous top knot or the ‘Fronut’ (Courtesy her hairstylist Vernon Francois). Her sparkly jewelry is by Chopard and she’s completed the look with a pair of pretty green shoes. Kudos to her style team in particular for getting it so right every time she hits the red carpet. Also let’s not miss out on the classic nude and all that twirling in her summery white frock. We love!

She’s a regular at Cannes and gets it right almost every time. The Chinese superstar is known for her amazing sartorial choices and this time was no different. She looks chic and elegant in this pretty white Marchesa gown. I love the hair band with little flowers attached to it as well as the interesting long sleeves and the flower detailing on the front. I love it when actresses take risks and get it right. She definitely looks every bit the stunner that she is.

For her second look she was seen wearing a Ralph and Russo gown. The British Haute Couture fashion house seemed to be the go-to label this year for a lot of actresses. From Cheryl Fernandez Versini to our very own Sonam Kapoor have all opted for pretty gowns from this label.

3. Natalie Portman in Dior:

And now we’re talking classy. Natalie Portman was seen wearing the most elegant dress from Dior Couture’s Spring-Summer 2015 collection at the screening of “A Tale of Love and Darkness”. The dress has an A-line pale blue silk skirt with pretty black flowers all over with a black strapless bodice. I’m definitely not missing out on those gorgeous pair of De Grisogono diamond earrings and the sleek hair. For her second look she wore a simple solid colored gown in red, again Dior. While both of her looks are pretty, I’m still gonna opt for her first look over the second.

4. Julianne Moore in Armani Prive:

I love everything about this look, from the beautifully embellished black Armani Prive gown to the stunning emerald earrings. Emerald is one of the most regal colors and just a tinge of it with white or black is perfection. It’s like the perfect red carpet look for me.

5. Karlie Kloss in Atelier Versace:

This one’s clearly the most unusual choice of garment for a red carpet event and I’m loving every bit of it. It’s white, it’s fun and it’s a jumpsuit. This one reminds me of Emma Stone wearing pants with a pretty embellished top at this year’s Golden Globes. With this one-pant jumpsuit I’m sure Karlie Kloss must have sent the flashbulbs into frenzy.

6. Naomi Watts in Elie Saab Couture:

Nobody does feathers like the way Elie Saab himself. The man is a genius when it comes to creating pretty princess gowns for red carpet events. I’ve become a huge admirer of his work since Taylor Swift wore his prettiest creations in the Blank Space video. From the sweeping train to the plunging neckline to the slick short hair, everything works out really well.

7. Emma Stone in Dior and Oscar de la Renta:

This year I’ve loved almost all of Emma Stones red carpet looks. From the Golden Globes to her Elie Saab gown at the Oscars. Dior is known for creating the classiest gowns and this gown is clearly no less. The pale green crepe silk and lace dress is perfection and so is the Oscar de la Renta little black dress she wore at Irrational Man’s photocall. Love, love, love!

8. Sonam Kapoor In Ralph Russo, Abu Jani- Sandeep Khosla and Elie Saab:

I do have a very biased opinion when it comes to Sonam Kapoor. She is someone I’ve grown up watching and I’ve been following all her looks since she came up with Aisha. In my own little world Bollywood can be classified into two different periods namely- the pre-Aisha era and the post-Aisha era. There used to be a time when nobody gave a frack about make-up or styling or designers in Bollywood. All that ever existed was garish make-up and awful lip colors (except for some timeless beauties like Rekha with her Kanjeevaram saris and Simi Garewaal with her classiest gowns and slick hairdos). Then came Aisha and Sonam Kapoor, and Pernia Qureshi and Rhea Kapoor and her incredible style team. All of a sudden there were actresses hiring stylists and make-up artists and a real style team. She has definitely upped the fashion stakes in Bollywood.

I’ve loved all of her looks from this year at Cannes. My favorites have been the Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla ruffle sari, the cobalt blue Ralph and Russo gown, the Elie Saab feather gown and the Black and golden Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla ensemble she wore at the Chopard party. What really upset me was the online backlash over the Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla sari she wore at her first day at Cannes. I went through the comments and was saddened to see how ridiculously people were bashing her for wearing a choli with a plunging neckline. For god’s sake take a moment to walk out of your little minds and appreciate the effort that goes into bringing it all together!

9. Cheryl Fernandez Versini in Ralph and Russo:

That embroidery on the front and the layering and pleating at the back! I need a moment to get over that first. <3

10. Tahar Rahim

There’s no effing way I’m missing out on the gorgeous men at Cannes. Most of us know about this French actor from The Prophet. I really love the way he’s keeping it so cool and casual. The idea of giving the shirt a miss and just opting for a simple cardigan with dress pants and the burgundy tassel loafers without a pair of socks is superbly casual yet classy. I am definitely taking a cue from him for my summer outfits.

I’m a voracious writer, an optimist and a lover of Indian art, music and fashion. I hated my P.T. classes as much as I love eating chocolates (loads of them). Half the time, I’m confident of what I do, the other half I’m terribly confused. Everyday of my life is like a page from a thrilling mystery novel written by God. It helps me, fascinates me and if someone asks ‘about me’, I say, “Sorry the novel isn’t over yet”. To know more about Anwesh: https://theeffeminare.wordpress.com/
