What comes to your mind instinctively when you hear the word design? Oh! So you must be thinking it’s a bit too odd to put forward the question at this stage as it has obviously got a pigeonholed answer. Hmm… well, we know it might have one for you. After all, we aren’t in-cognizant of the fact that our mindsand our designomanic (don’t trouble yourself looking up the word in thesaurus, we have coined it) quotient are strictly demarcated. All the softwares hovering around you have unsurprisingly clouded our vision and the surrounding hullaballoo has delimited our imagination to the realm of Photoshop and sketching (or to a little wider domain for some). While the mere mention of the word designing, is sure to fill you with immense creativity, most of you wouldn’t have ventured into the depths of the vast sea of Design, subliminally flowing within and around you- The Design World as we call it dotingly.
From the minutest details on a potter’s artwork to the intricately architectural plans of the giant skyscrapers, from the overlooked pattern on the pigeon’s charismatic wings to the over-hyped aesthetics of the blueprints in the fashion industry, from the humorous cartoon strips in a weekly to the rigorous coding software shaping the commercial and entertaining websites on the internet (web design as you call it), from the sketches of an artist to the latest launched graphic tablet simulating the magic of the same, this world has got much more to Design apart from the not-so-uncommon clichés.
Today Design is widely associated with its applications in applied art and architecture, engineering design, graphic design, game design, interior design, software design and web design. The boundaries between art and design are blurred, largely due to a range of applications both for the term ‘art’ and the term ‘design’. ‘Applied Arts’ has been used as an umbrella term to define fields of industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, etc.
In engineering, which is yet another dimension to its already diversified omnipotence, design is a component of the process itself. Here, design means to conceive and formulate a plan and engineering is the application of those plans and formulations in the framework of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as an industry or an economic structure, process or system. Thus engineering and industry become obvious platforms for design to step in and show its mettle.
Web Designing, which is the process of transforming conceptual ideas and requirements into a working website, is one of them. The different areas of web design include web graphic design, interface design, authoring, user experience design, and search engine optimization. The basic process of designing includes the information architecture, user interface, site structure, navigation, layout, colors fonts, and imagery. All of these are combined with the principles of design to create a website that meets the goals of the owner and designer.
Last but definitely not the least, the video games you play on your entertainment PC, PS and Xbox forms the gigantic world of game designing. Never pictured horizon of your design world to have your favorite video game now, did you. Guess not. But yes the most crucial and vital decisions are made during the course of a game’s development about the game’s design; it is the responsibility of the designer to decide which elements will be implemented, based on, for example, consistency with the game’s vision, budget or hardware limitations. As such, even the minute features of your favorite games are all a result of constant brainstorming by the champions of their field toiling day and night to deliver you the best possible, holding high the flag of the designers and the design-o-maniacs all over the planet.
So if you see, the small web template you used yesterday or the landscape you just painted are a mere fraction of the big world out there, which is complete in itself, yet, is incomplete without the various threads of designing- tying it up together and making it ever so beautiful and mesmerizing Yes, the World is full of Designing, Designing is-the world; so small and intricate but ever-so growing every single day.
Long live the designers!! Long live the DESIGN WORLD!!
